Luis Burgos was born in 1971 in Santurce, Puerto Rico to a Puerto Rican father and a Dominican mother. Growing up in Santurce, Luis spent many a weekend hanging around the informal corner jam sessions known as bembé,learning the interplay of rhythm and lyrical phrasing, as well as how to turn everyday stories about homeland, love, and life into poetry. The human connection at the heart of this music has been a constant in his life. At the age of 12, Luis moved to the South Bronx, New York. Over the next twenty years he developed his passion for music, spending many years as the founder, songwriter and guitarist of the Latin rock fusion group Candela Soul.He also worked in the beauty business, learning the importance of wellness and self-care from his time in top New York City salons. Since 2009, Luis has focused on raising his son and developing a new passion for photography. In 2015, Luis moved with his family to Chicago, Illinois. It was here, watching media accounts of the trauma of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, that Luis was inspired to create Don’t Forget About Me.
